Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a parasitic worm that resides in the heart. It is transmitted by mosquitoes. Heartworm disease is difficult to treat and is often fatal. While cases of heartworm disease are low in the Maritimes, heartworm is common in the US and Ontario, especially in warm places. Preventative medication, that prevents cats and dogs from getting heartworm, fleas, and other parasites, should be used from April to December.
